UHealth Sports Medicine physicians are fellowship-trained in sports medicine, and nationally recognized specialists in orthopaedic surgery, physical medicine, rehabilitation, and family practice.

In addition to serving as the team doctors for all University of Miami Hurricanes athletes, they are actively involved in research and education to enhance patient care and athletic performance.

Lee D. Kaplan, M.D.

Lee D. Kaplan, M.D. Lee D. Kaplan, a renowned specialist in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, is Chief of UHealth Sports Medicine, a division of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The division is the official sports medicine provider for the Miami Hurricanes.

Dr. Kaplan is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Having earned an Undergraduate Degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1990 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from George Washington University in 1995, Dr. Kaplan completed his residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Orthopaedic Surgery in June 2000.

He simultaneously completed a sports medicine/shoulder fellowship and a clinical instructor sports medicine and research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, 2000-2002. Prior to joining the UM Miller School of Medicine Orthopaedics team, Dr. Kaplan served concurrently as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation and Affiliate Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine. Dr. Kaplan is currently a Diplomate of the Board, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and holds Medical Licenses in the States of Florida and Wisconsin.

An expert on conditions resulting from sports-related injury, Dr. Kaplan is the author of multiple articles on sports medicine and articular cartilage, as well as a wide range of other Orthopaedic disciplines. His articles have been published in numerous medical journals in the United States, Canada and abroad. A member of many professional and honorary organizations, such as the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Kaplan has received many prestigious honors and awards.

Bryson Lesniak, M.D.

Bryson Lesniak, M.D. Bryson Lesniak, M.D., a sports medicine specialist and surgeon, is an assistant professor with UHealth Sports Medicine, a division of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The division is the official sports medicine provider for the Miami Hurricanes.

Dr. Lesniak works with UM’s Athletic Department and has previously assisted the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Steelers, University of Michigan Athletics, and University of Pittsburgh Athletics, among others.

Dr. Lesniak graduated from Pennsylvania State University, and earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School, followed by a Sports Medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

During his fellowship at UPMC, Dr. Lesniak received extensive training in both single- and double-bundle ACL reconstruction, highly effective procedures for repairing anterior cruciate ligament tears common among competitive athletes in many sports.

Dr. Lesniak takes a holistic approach in treating his patients, looking at not just the injury but the person as a whole, and then tailoring the treatment to meet the patient’s needs and expectations. He believes that the body wants to heal itself, and it is the role of the Sports Medicine physician to help the body do just that by using the body’s own healing powers to its advantage.

A Pittsburgh native, Dr. Lesniak is also a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

Clifton Page, M.D., CAQSM
Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician

Clifton Page, M.D., CAQSM Clifton Page, M.D., CAQSM, is a Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician in the Sports Medicine Division of UHealth's Department of Orthopaedics.

Board certified in family medicine and sports medicine, Dr. Page's clinical interests include the non-operative care of sports-related injuries, especially tendonopathies, general medical conditions in the athlete, and sports injury prevention.

Dr. Page received a B.S. in Science-Business from the University of Notre Dame in 1998, and earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University in 2003.

During medical school he fostered his interest in sports medicine by volunteering at different local sporting events and participating in early sports medicine electives.

Upon graduating from medical school, Dr. Page completed a residency in family medicine at Ohio State, where he received the Academy of Family Physicians Resident Teaching Award.

Dr. Page continued his training and finished a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Ohio State. During his fellowship, he published a book chapter for Clinics in Sports Medicine, and was an integral part of the sports medicine team.

He provided medical coverage for The Ohio State Buckeyes' football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's lacrosse, women's ice hockey, and softball teams.

Upon completing his fellowship, Dr. Page moved to Miami to become a staff physician at the University of Miami Student Health Center and Team Physician for the University of Miami Hurricanes.

Dr. Page is an active volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami and Habitat for Humanity.

Michael Y. Wang, M.D.
Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery and Rehabilitation

Michael Y. Wang, M.D. Michael Y. Wang, M.D., is a neurological surgeon in the Sports Medicine Division of UHealth's Department of Orthopaedics.

Board certified in neurological surgery, Dr. Wang's focus is on treatment for complex spinal disorders, including minimally invasive spine surgery, cervical and lumbar disc replacement, complex spinal instrumentation (a method of straightening and stabilizing the spine after spinal fusion to redistribute stresses on the bones and help maintain proper alignment), total disc replacement, spinal reconstruction, and surgery for neuropathic pain. He has innovated minimally invasive spine surgery techniques, particularly the investigation and development of outcomes assessments in spinal surgery. Dr. Wang has been a prolific researcher and has published over one hundred peer reviewed papers, book chapters, abstracts, and oral presentations. He has received both the distinguished Sanford Larson and Frank Mayfield Research Awards from the Joint Spine Section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS).

An active member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Dr. Wang serves on many committees dedicated to exploring and disseminating the newest and most effective spinal cord injury research trials and treatments, including the executive committee of the AANS/CNS Joint Spine Section where he is also chairman of the publications committee; on the executive committee of AANS Young Neurosurgeons, and as a member of the CNS educational committee.

Dr. Wang received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Stanford University. After completing a residency at University of Southern California and LA County Hospita in 2001, Dr. Wang underwent fellowship training at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital in 2002. Before coming to Miami, Dr. Wang was the spine director at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, and the spine fellowship director at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center.

Gillian A. Hotz, Ph.D.

Gillian A. Hotz, Ph.D. Gillian A. Hotz, Ph.D., associate research professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, is a nationally recognized research neuropsychologist and expert in pediatric and adult neurotrauma, concussion management, and neurorehabilitation. She has extensive experience in neurocognitive testing and is licensed and certified to perform IMPACT, a computerized neurocognitive screening to assess mental status following a concussion.

Dr. Hotz has been co-director of the Miller School of Medicine's Concussion Program since 1995, and continues to assess and treat many athletes from Miami-Dade County public and private high schools, UM, and FIU, as well as others from the community.

A graduate of the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, Dr. Hotz earned a Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience at Boston University School of Medicine. She has been working at the Miller School of Medicine since 1992, first developing an Intermediate Head Injury Service and now co-directing the Pediatric Brain & SCI Program. She also conducts federally funded clinical research studies for traumatic brain injury in children.

Dr. Hotz has published many articles on injury prevention for WalkSafeTM, a pedestrian injury prevention program, and traumatic brain injury. She is a member of many professional and honorary organizations and committees.

Lisa Dorfman, M.S., R.D., CSSD, LMHC Lisa Dorfman, MS, RD, CSSD, LMHC, is a sports nutritionist and board-certified specialist in sports dietetics and is a professional counselor for the Sports Medicine Division of UHealth's Department of Orthopaedics.

Dorfman has been a leader in the health care field for more than two decades as a licensed nutritionist, licensed psychotherapist, certified coach and athlete working with professional, world, and national class athletes to promote optimal performance through healthy eating. Since 2003, she has been the Sports Nutritionist for the UM Hurrcianes Athletic Department and has taught in the University of Miami Department of Exercise and Sports Science. Lisa is personal nutritionist for many professional athletes, including those in the NFL, MLB, PGA, USTA and is the US Sailing Olympic and Paralympics Team Nutritionist. In 2008, Lisa was selected to be a member of the inaugural USOC Sport Dietitian Network to assist the United States Olympic Committee in providing nutrition coaching services to the National Governing Bodies (NGB's) and Olympic/Paralympic Teams.

As a leader in her profession, Lisa was a national media spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association and has served as chairman for the Nutrition Entrepreneurs (NE), Vegetarian Nutrition (VN) and Dietetics in Developmental and Psychiatric Disorders Practice Groups (DPGs). She was selected by her colleagues as Recognized Dietitian of the Year and has been named to Who's Who in American Women.

The author of four books on food and diet, Dorfman is Nutrition Editor for SoBeFit Magazine and a columnist for South Florida Adventures Magazine. Lisa has appeared on 20/20, Dateline, FOX News, CNN, MSNBC and ESPN and the NBC, CBS & ABC affiliates in cities nationwide and has been featured in numerous publications including: USA Today, Newsweek, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Men’s Fitness, Men’s Health, Muscle and Fitness, Runners World, Marie Claire, O, Glamour, and Shape magazines.. She is known nationally as "The Running Nutritionist™," a competitive runner and triathlete who has competed in more than 34 marathons, IronmanUSA Lake Placid, dozens of half marathons and 1/2 ironmans, and hundreds of running and multisport races.

Vincent A. Scavo, ATC LAT Vincent "Vinny" Scavo, ATC LAT is head athletic trainer for UHealth Sports Medicine, a division of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The division is the official sports medicine provider for the University of Miami Hurricanes.

Scavo has extensive experience as an athletic trainer for high school, college and pro teams. At the high school level, he has been head athletic trainer at Coral Gables High School, Miami Southridge Senior High, and Chaminade-Madonna. He also worked with the FHSAA State Wrestling Sports Medicine Team in Lakeland for eight years.

During Scavo's 13 years in Miami-Dade County Public Schools, he developed the curriculum for the MDCPS Coaches Certification Course, and the MDCPS Injury Reporting System. In 2006, Scavo was named Florida's High School Athletic Trainer of the Year.

At the college level, Scavo has worked at Florida State University and the University of Miami, where he was part of the Hurricanes' 1984 Football and 1985 Baseball national championship teams. He also worked with the USA Baseball Team from 1987 to 1992.

In the pros, Scavo has worked with the New York Yankees and the Florida Marlins. He served as the Marlins' minor league athletic trainer, and also as coordinator of athletic trainers and rehab coordinator for both the minor and major league teams. In 1994, Scavo was named Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year.

Scavo has also worked at HealthSouth, and served for several years on the executive board of the Athletic Trainers of Florida. He is a member of the Barry University Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.
Francisco J. Sanchez, PA-C, MPAS, FAAPA
Physician Assistant, UHealth Sports Medicine

Francisco J. “Frank” Sanchez, PA-C, MPAS, FAAPA, is physician assistant for UHealth Sports Medicine, a division of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The division is the official sports medicine provider for the University of Miami Hurricanes.

A board certified physician assistant, Sanchez has extensive surgical training in general surgery, trauma, cardiovascular and transplant. He has special interest in multi-sport physiology and training, with an emphasis on sports injury prevention and rehabilitation, as well as surgical and non-surgical therapies.

He is licensed in Advanced Trauma Life Support (Auditor), Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support, and also as a PICC Line Insertion Specialist.

Prior to joining the Sports Medicine team, Sanchez was chief surgical physician assistant at the Miami VA Hospital. He held the same position at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, and before that served as surgical physician assistant at Concord Hospital-Concord Surgical Associates in New Hampshire.

Sanchez graduated from the University of Florida with a B.S. degree in nutritional science. He also earned a B.S. degree in medicine and a Masters degree in physician assistant studies from the University of Florida’s College of Medicine.

Sanchez is a member of the PhI Theta Kappa International Honor Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Department of Homeland Security FEMA International Medical Surgical Urgent Response Team–South. He is also a fellow in the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

A USA Triathalon certified coach, Sanchez has been actively involved as a competitive amateur Ironman triathlete and runner since 1999.
