UHealth Sports Medicine Center physicians are fellowship-trained in sports medicine, and nationally recognized specialists in orthopaedic surgery, physical medicine, rehabilitation, and family practice.

In addition to serving as the team doctors for all University of Miami Hurricanes athletes, they are actively involved in research and education to enhance patient care and athletic performance.

Lee D. Kaplan, M.D.

Lee D. Kaplan, M.D. Lee D. Kaplan, a renowned specialist in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, is Chief of UHealth Sports Medicine, a division of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The division is the official sports medicine provider for the Miami Hurricanes.

Dr. Kaplan is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Having earned an Undergraduate Degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1990 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from George Washington University in 1995, Dr. Kaplan completed his residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Orthopaedic Surgery in June 2000.

He simultaneously completed a sports medicine/shoulder fellowship and a clinical instructor sports medicine and research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, 2000-2002. Prior to joining the UM Miller School of Medicine Orthopaedics team, Dr. Kaplan served concurrently as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation and Affiliate Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine. Dr. Kaplan is currently a Diplomate of the Board, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and holds Medical Licenses in the States of Florida and Wisconsin.

An expert on conditions resulting from sports-related injury, Dr. Kaplan is the author of multiple articles on sports medicine and articular cartilage, as well as a wide range of other Orthopaedic disciplines. His articles have been published in numerous medical journals in the United States, Canada and abroad. A member of many professional and honorary organizations, such as the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Kaplan has received many prestigious honors and awards.

Alejandro Posada, M.D.

Alejandro Posada, M.D. Alejandro Posada, M.D. is Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Sports Medicine Division of UHealth's Department of Orthopaedics. The division is the official sports medicine provider for the Miami Hurricanes.

An assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Dr. Posada is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the author of numerous articles on sports medicine and other orthopaedic disciplines.

Dr. Posada attended University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and in 1989 earned his medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia.

He completed an orthopaedic surgery internship at Fundacion Santa Fe Bogota, and a research fellowship in sports medicine at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

His training continued at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, with a general surgery internship and orthopaedic surgery residency, followed by a sports medicine fellowship at Harvard University/Massachusetts General Hospital.

Prior to joining University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Dr. Posada held several positions at Miami VA Medical Center, including Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon; Chief, Orthopaedic Surgery Section, and Assistant Chief of Surgery.

Dr. Posada was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society in 1993. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and Arthroscopy Association of North America. He also is a member of the Dade County Medical Association and Colombian Medical Association.

Dr. Posada has served as medical director of the Miami Tropical Marathon since 1993, and team physician for the University of Miami Women's Soccer and Basketball teams.

Clifton Page, M.D., CAQSM
Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine


Clifton Page, M.D., CAQSM Clifton Page, M.D., CAQSM, is a Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician in the Sports Medicine Division of UHealth's Department of Orthopaedics.

Board certified in family medicine and sports medicine, Dr. Page's clinical interests include the non-operative care of sports-related injuries, especially tendonopathies, general medical conditions in the athlete, and sports injury prevention.

Dr. Page received a B.S. in Science-Business from the University of Notre Dame in 1998, and earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University in 2003.

During medical school he fostered his interest in sports medicine by volunteering at different local sporting events and participating in early sports medicine electives.

Upon graduating from medical school, Dr. Page completed a residency in family medicine at Ohio State, where he received the Academy of Family Physicians Resident Teaching Award.

Dr. Page continued his training and finished a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Ohio State. During his fellowship, he published a book chapter for Clinics in Sports Medicine, and was an integral part of the sports medicine team.

He provided medical coverage for The Ohio State Buckeyes' football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's lacrosse, women's ice hockey, and softball teams.

Upon completing his fellowship, Dr. Page moved to Miami to become a staff physician at the University of Miami Student Health Center and Team Physician for the University of Miami Hurricanes.

Dr. Page is an active volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami and Habitat for Humanity.

Bruce S. Rubin, MD
Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology

Bruce S. Rubin, M.D. Dr. Bruce Rubin is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology at the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine. He also currently serves as the Director of the Spasticity Clinic at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Rubin received his Bachelor’s of Science degree from Hobart College and his Doctor of Medicine degree from State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse. He completed his Neurological residency at the Neurologic Institute at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York and his post-doctoral fellowship in Neurological Rehabilitation at the University Of Miami School Of Medicine.

Having trained and practiced at Jackson Memorial Hospital - Ryder Trauma Center, Dr. Rubin has a plethora of experience in managing brain injured patients of all levels of severity. In the past, he ran the Intermediate Head Injury Unit at JMH. In addition, he has helped manage the concussion clinic here at JMH/UM for the past 7 years. Dr. Rubin has lectured nationally about brain injury and, more specifically, about the management of mild brain injury and concussion.

Gillian A. Hotz, Ph.D.

Gillian A. Hotz, Ph.D. Gillian A. Hotz, Ph.D., associate research professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, is a nationally recognized research neuropsychologist and expert in pediatric and adult neurotrauma, concussion management, and neurorehabilitation. She has extensive experience in neurocognitive testing and is licensed and certified to perform IMPACT, a computerized neurocognitive screening to assess mental status following a concussion.

Dr. Hotz has been co-director of the Miller School of Medicine's Concussion Program since 1995, and continues to assess and treat many athletes from Miami-Dade County public and private high schools, UM, and FIU, as well as others from the community.

A graduate of the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, Dr. Hotz earned a Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience at Boston University School of Medicine. She has been working at the Miller School of Medicine since 1992, first developing an Intermediate Head Injury Service and now co-directing the Pediatric Brain & SCI Program. She also conducts federally funded clinical research studies for traumatic brain injury in children.

Dr. Hotz has published many articles on injury prevention for WalkSafeTM, a pedestrian injury prevention program, and traumatic brain injury. She is a member of many professional and honorary organizations and committees.

Vincent A. Scavo, ATC LAT
Head Athletic Trainer, UHealth Sports Medicine

Vincent A. Scavo, ATC LAT Vincent "Vinny" Scavo, ATC LAT is head athletic trainer for UHealth Sports Medicine, a division of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The division is the official sports medicine provider for the University of Miami Hurricanes.

Scavo has extensive experience as an athletic trainer for high school, college and pro teams. At the high school level, he has been head athletic trainer at Coral Gables High School, Miami Southridge Senior High, and Chaminade-Madonna. He also worked with the FHSAA State Wrestling Sports Medicine Team in Lakeland for eight years.

During Scavo's 13 years in Miami-Dade County Public Schools, he developed the curriculum for the MDCPS Coaches Certification Course, and the MDCPS Injury Reporting System. In 2006, Scavo was named Florida's High School Athletic Trainer of the Year.

At the college level, Scavo has worked at Florida State University and the University of Miami, where he was part of the Hurricanes' 1984 Football and 1985 Baseball national championship teams. He also worked with the USA Baseball Team from 1987 to 1992.

In the pros, Scavo has worked with the New York Yankees and the Florida Marlins. He served as the Marlins' minor league athletic trainer, and also as coordinator of athletic trainers and rehab coordinator for both the minor and major league teams. In 1994, Scavo was named Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year.

Scavo has also worked at HealthSouth, and served for several years on the executive board of the Athletic Trainers of Florida. He is a member of the Barry University Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

Francisco J. Sanchez, PA-C, MPAS, FAAPA
Physician Assistant, UHealth Sports Medicine

Francisco J. “Frank” Sanchez, PA-C, MPAS, FAAPA, is physician assistant for UHealth Sports Medicine, a division of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The division is the official sports medicine provider for the University of Miami Hurricanes.

A board certified physician assistant, Sanchez has extensive surgical training in general surgery, trauma, cardiovascular and transplant. He has special interest in multi-sport physiology and training, with an emphasis on sports injury prevention and rehabilitation, as well as surgical and non-surgical therapies.

He is licensed in Advanced Trauma Life Support (Auditor), Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support, and also as a PICC Line Insertion Specialist.

Prior to joining the Sports Medicine team, Sanchez was chief surgical physician assistant at the Miami VA Hospital. He held the same position at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, and before that served as surgical physician assistant at Concord Hospital-Concord Surgical Associates in New Hampshire.

Sanchez graduated from the University of Florida with a B.S. degree in nutritional science. He also earned a B.S. degree in medicine and a Masters degree in physician assistant studies from the University of Florida’s College of Medicine.

Sanchez is a member of the PhI Theta Kappa International Honor Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Department of Homeland Security FEMA International Medical Surgical Urgent Response Team–South. He is also a fellow in the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

A USA Triathalon certified coach, Sanchez has been actively involved as a competitive amateur Ironman triathlete and runner since 1999.
