Conditions & Treatment : Elbow Injuries
Elbow Injuries
Ulnar Collateral Ligament:
The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is located on the inside of the elbow joint. This injury is more prevelant in baseball pitchers and can be caused by bad biomechanics and overuse. Treatment options vary from surgical reconstruction (Tommy John surgery) to physical therapy.
Cartilage Injury and Loose Bodies:
Osteochondritis dissecans can involve the bone and cartilage of the elbow joint. OCD’s can be a result of mild recurrent injuries, or growth disturbances. OCD’s can become loose bodies within the joint and cause joint pain, stiffness, and even locking of the joint. OCD’s and loose bodies cause range of motion to be limited and would most likely benefit from elbow arthroscopy.
Lateral Epicondylitis:
Localized pain on the outside of the elbow better known as “tennis elbow” can be caused by repetitive overuse activities and more commonly seen amongst tennis players.
Medial Epicondylitis:
Localized pain on the inside of the elbow more commonly referred to as “golfer’s elbow” can be caused by overuse activities and more commonly in golf hitting fat shots and creating a deep divot.
